~ The Secret of Japanese Home Baths: Clean Water, Smart Features, Ultimate Relaxation ~
Alright, it’s bath time! Yay!
Issy, do you like taking a bath?
I find it kind of troublesome, so I don’t like it that much.
I love taking a bath!
I think many Japanese people enjoy a bath, and honestly, it’s one of my favorite times of the day too.
When I traveled abroad, I was really surprised by how different baths were.
So let me explain what makes Japanese home baths special.
That’s interesting!
Tell me about it!
First of all, in most Japanese homes, the shower and the bathtub are used differently.
You wash your body outside the bathtub using the shower,
and after you’re clean, you get into the bathtub just to relax.
Wait, so you don’t wash your hair in the tub??
Why not? It looks warm and comfy!!
Nope! We keep the bathtub water clean because the whole family shares it.
Hair washing and body washing are done before you get in.
Oh, and many people wash their hair every day.
That was actually surprising for me!
In Sweden, we usually don’t have a bathtub, just a shower.
And even if there is a bathtub, people wash their hair and body inside the tub!
Japanese home baths aren’t just warm.
They’re full of smart features.
For example, you can set the water temperature and keep it perfectly stable.
Some systems even announce: “The bath is ready♪.”
What?! The bath talks?!
That’s a butler!!
There’s also an automatic fill function that pours the perfect amount of hot water.
Timers, eco functions, and features that reduce water and energy usage are built in as well.
My favorite is the reheat function!
Even if the water cools down, you can warm it up again without refilling.
I had never seen that before coming to Japan.

So the bath keeps itself warm… definitely a butler!!
But why did Japanese baths become so advanced?
I think there are some reasons.
First, Japan has inexpensive water because the country is rich in water resources.
And since families typically share the same bathwater, we try to keep it clean and warm efficiently.
So you wash before entering, relax in clean water, and sometimes take a quick rinse after getting out.
It’s actually really smart and eco-friendly.
I want a Japanese bath!! I’ll stay in there forever!!
…But don’t worry, I won’t drink the bathwater!
Summary
Japanese home baths are designed for relaxation. They also come with advanced features like temperature control, automatic filling, and reheating, making bath time a uniquely comfortable experience.
