~ “Kokyo“: History, Gardens, and Must-See Tenno‘s Residence~

But Issy, where does “Tenno” live? Is it a big castle?
I’d love to meet him in person someday!

Tenno” doesn’t live in a castle.
He lives in the Imperial Palace called Kokyo in Tokyo.

It’s located right in the heart of Tokyo. After being damaged during World War II,
it was rebuilt and now serves as the residence for the Imperial family and a place for official ceremonies.

I’ve been to the Imperial Palace a few times, and it’s such a beautiful and peaceful place!

While most of the palace grounds are off-limits to the public,
there are several areas that people can visit and enjoy.

Wow! So beautiful!

Normally, you can’t go inside the palace itself,
but there are a few special occasions when the public is allowed in.

Twice a year, on January 2nd (New Year’s Greeting) and the Tenno’s Birthday (February 23rd),
the Imperial family appears on the balcony to wave to visitors.
You can also join a guided tour, but it requires a reservation in advance.

I want to join the guided tour someday!

The area around the palace is also famous for jogging.
The loop around the palace is about 5 kilometers, and it’s super popular with both locals and visitors.

Running while enjoying the beautiful scenery sounds so refreshing!

Historically, the Imperial Palace was once Edo Castle during the Edo period.
After the Meiji Restoration in the 19th century, “Tenno” moved from Kyoto to Tokyo,
and Edo Castle became the Imperial Palace.

So, this place is not only beautiful, but also deeply connected to Japan’s modern history.

Wow, so it’s like stepping into a piece of history and yet it’s still part of daily life today.
I love that mix of old and new in Japan.

Summary

Kokyo” or the Imperial Palace is Tenno’s residence in the heart of Tokyo, rich in history as the former Edo Castle. While most areas are closed to the public, visitors can enjoy beautiful gardens, iconic bridges, seasonal scenery, and even special events where the Imperial family greets the public.
