Japanese Toilets 101: A Clean and Cozy Surprise for Visitors – Part 1

JAPAN IN
ONE MINUTE

~ Why Japanese Toilets Are So Clean and Comfortable Even in Public! ~

Hey Issy, I just saw a TV interview where some foreigners were talking about how surprised they were by Japanese toilets!
What makes Japanese toilets so special?

In Japan, toilets are known not only for their technology, but also for how clean and accessible they are.
Whether you’re in a train station, a department store, or even a park, you’ll almost always find a clean toilet
and it’s usually free to use. Cleanliness and comfort are seen as essential, even in public spaces.

That is my favorite part of Japan. In Sweden, public toilets are either dirty or you have to pay to use them.
But here, they’re free and clean. It feels like people really care.

You can use them for free and they’re super clean?
That’s like a dream!

Another thing that surprises many visitors is the warm toilet seats.
Especially during winter, the seats are gently heated.
It may sound like a small thing, but on a cold day, it makes all the difference.

Oh yes! The first time I sat on one, it was so warm and comfy!
Now I can’t go back to cold toilet seats anymore.

It might seem like a small thing, but in Japan, there’s a strong cultural habit of keeping public spaces clean out of consideration for the next person.

Oh, really? Now I want to learn more about Japanese toilets!

Got it! Then in the next post, I’ll tell you about the history of toilets in Japan!

Summary

Japanese toilets are famous not just for their high-tech features like heated seats, but also for being clean, comfortable, and free to use, even in public places. This reflects a cultural value of caring for shared spaces and thinking of the next person.
