Have you ever eaten “onigiri” (Rice ball)?

Of course! “Onigiri” is super common in Japan. We eat it all the time.

No, I haven’t…. but I always see those “onigiri” in anime!

I found it in my favorite Japanese movie, Spirited Away, where Chihiro eats one while crying, a moment full of emotion.

Onigiri is a traditional Japanese food made from cooked rice, shaped by hand. Usually, it’s triangle or round shaped.

I always wondered why “Onigiri“? Is there a reason behind it?

Actually, yes. “Onigiri” has been around for centuries.
It was originally developed as a preserved food, using rice, our staple food.

It’s said that samurai during the Sengoku period ate “onigiri” between battles.
Because they were easy to carry and lasted longer, “onigiri” were considered practical battlefield food.

Whoa, so it was like ancient Japanese energy food?

Exactly! And even now, “onigiri” is loved as a quick lunch or snack.
You can find them everywhere from homes to convenience stores.
